SAN FERNANDO CITY — After barely three days when a priest turned over to the La Union Botanical Garden here an endangered adult serpent eagle rescued in Abra province, now it’s a village chief’s turn to release a sick rare Philippine hawk eagle caught in the hinterlands of San Gabriel, La Union.
The eagle, with scientific name Spizaeutus Philippensis, was malnourished and underweight when it was turned over yesterday by Renato Laquidan, chairman of Lipay Sur and president of the Liga ng mga Barangay in San Gabriel, to the environmentalist Mayor Pablo Ortega of this city.
The eagle was placed under the care of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources for two-week quarantine and treatment before it will be released to the Garden.
Ortega told The STAR that the eagle was taken by Laquidan from a resident when he noticed that the bird was sick. — Jun Elias
